grapefruit anti aging serum

Grapefruit anti aging serum

Grapeseed and Apricot oils are light, easily soaked up by the skin, and good for fine lines. While Avocado oil is a bit heavier, it is also one of the most easily absorbed oils, and can reach the deeper skin layers where it reduces age spots, heals sun damage and increases collagen. Grapefruit essential oil is high in vitamin C. It smells great, and lifts my mood as well as my immune system.

red rose

Rosewater mask

If you’ve been stressed out lately, (or ever) you know firsthand what it can do to your skin.

Traffic is usually what gets me. If someone gave me a new pair of shoes for each of the many hours I’ve spent sitting in my car commuting for work, the prada pile would be visible from space. I can feel my pores clogging just thinking about it.

In this cold winter weather especially, when skin is already dry, the last thing we need is breakouts.

What would Cleopatra do? I’ll bet she knew all about stress, being a woman and trying to rule Egypt. Plus she had that dry desert air to contend with!

The ancient Egyptians were probably among the first to discover the benefits of rosewater. It’s said she used it as a facial toner, probably because of its anti-inflammatory properties and ability to soothe and moisturize dry skin. Plus it smells nice!

Brewers Yeast, the same stuff used in brewing beer, is full of B vitamins for healthy skin. It also has chromium, which has been shown to improve acne.

I’m sure they also had beer back in the pyramid days, but they probably drank it instead of wearing it.

Anti-aging Potato Starch Mask

This stuff makes my skin glow and feel incredibly soft. It tones and moisturizes, which is good for reducing fine lines and pores. Plus it is healing, anti-inflammatory, and has all sorts of vitamins and minerals that are great for skin.

The cucumber smelled great while I sat around for 10 minutes, looking green. (link to rosewater yeast mask)Again. Why are all the best homemade facial masks green? I don’t know. What I DO know, is that the rest of that cucumber needs to go into a nice Gin n Tonic!

face wash

Honey lemon face wash

I haven’t bought face cleanser in years. When I began experimenting with making my own face wash, I mixed up a couple batches that admittedly, weren’t great. But I kept trying until I ended up this recipe, the one I’ve been using for two years now.

Have you ever noticed the list of approximately 12,000 ingredients on the back of cleansers from the store or makeup department? I’m not a fan. Most of the words are unpronounceable, and evoke images of beaker-shaking scientists in chemistry labs. I decided my face would look better without the daily dose of gryzambeloxydrite. Ok, I just made that one up. But you couldn’t tell, could you? How can any laboratory chemical be good for my skin?

light and dark mauve eye shadow

DIY Eyeshadow

I was sooo excited to find this DIY eye shadow tutorial online! The thought of making my own makeup had never even crossed my mind. I love the mineral foundation and eye shadows I buy because they work, and while I’ve never looked too closely at the ingredients, I assume/hope they are better than most other makeup out there. However, it does get expensive! The idea that I could make my own super 100% natural makeup was so awesome, it was almost too good to be true.

And it is. At least it is from what I’ve seen with this particular eye shadow formula. Luckily I have a great naturals store nearby that sells a huge quantity of items in bulk, so I only spent less than $1.50 on this experiment.

rosehip seed oil moisturizer

Rosehip seed oil moisturizer

My rosehip seed oil finally arrived yesterday. Hooray!

I noticed rosehip seed oil was gaining in popularity, but I ignored it, right up until my head did one of those double takes when I read this comment

It’s better than Botox (in our opinion)

With skin rejuvenating properties like vitamin C and lycopene, rosehip seed oil is a safer solution to repair the skin’s surface, restore elasticity and protects against sun and pollution stressors that can lead to wrinkles.

While I realize that most things in life are better than being stabbed in the face with bovine toxin, I have not come across a natural substance than produces similar effects.

Lavender bath bomb

I can’t wait to use this! I’ve been reading about the health benefits of Epsom salt lately. It’s not actually salt, but a natural magnesium mineral. In addition to being relaxing, it actually eliminates toxins from the body. Find out more here.

“Stress drains the body of magnesium and increases levels of adrenaline. When dissolved in warm water, Epsom salt is absorbed through the skin and replenishes the level of magnesium in the body. The magnesium helps to produce serotonin, a mood-elevating chemical within the brain that creates a feeling of calm and relaxation.”

homemade lip gloss

Lip shimmer

I come across a lot of diy makeup recipes. I think it’s such a cool idea, and I’d love to make my own. Every so often, in a fit of optimism, I will attempt to create one.

99% of the time, the source recipe will not show the finished product, or what it looks like on a real person. I’m beginning to realize that if they did, nobody would bother trying to replicate it. So I’m going to show you my results. (not pretty!)

coconut conditioner

Coconut Avocado hair conditioner

Are you about to run out of hair conditioner? Instead of running to the store to buy more, try making your own. Here’s a small batch recipe to test. Make twice as much next time if you decide that you like soft, coconut-scented hair!

finished eye makeup remover

Eye makeup remover

My old eye makeup remover costs $8 for a 4oz bottle. Not a terrible price, considering others can cost $30 or more. But even my relatively inexpensive choice, with all its green tea, chamomile and zero fragrance claims, still contained preservatives and other ingredients so complicated their names nearly required all 26 letters of the alphabet. It’s hard to get away from things like that with mass produced products that sit around for lengthy amounts of time.

This has just four natural ingredients. It works great, it’s probably much better for you, and it saves money. What’s not to like?
